Iowa NAHRO Scholarship Program


GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND APPLICATION

The Iowa NAHRO Scholarship program was created in 1999 with the intent of providing empowerment opportunities to two clients of Iowa NAHRO member services. It is with this goal that Iowa Housing Officials, through their professional association, the Iowa Chapter of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials, announce this scholarship program. Iowa NAHRO intends to award two scholarships of $1,000 each to eligible recipients. Applications are available from all local Iowa NAHRO members, the Iowa NAHRO Board of Directors, the Iowa NAHRO Scholarship Committee, or by clicking on the application link above.

ELIGIBLE APPLICANT

An eligible applicant shall meet any of the following Criteria:

AWARD #1 -- $1,000

1. A family member of the immediate household that has been the recipient of rental housing assistance (funded under an executed rent assistance contract) for at least one year of the last two years, from a local housing authority (PHA) or other agency in good standing and having an Agency or Individual Membership to Iowa NAHRO.

2. Any immediate household member of a recipient of HOME or CDBG funds assistance (as evidenced by recipient signature and dated work contract or completion inspection signoff) within the most recent two years, from a Community Development Agency or not-for-profit CHODO providing housing assistance, that is in good standing and having an Agency or Individual Membership to Iowa NAHRO

3. In the fall of the award year will be registered as a full or part time student at any private or public Community College, College or University, working toward an Associate or Bachelors Degree or an equivalent program.

AWARD #2 -- $1,000

1. Any immediate family member of an employee, or an employee of, a Local or Regional Housing Agency (PHA), Community Development Agency, or not-for-profit CHODO, providing housing assistance, that is in good standing and has an Agency or Individual Membership to Iowa NAHRO.

2. In the fall of the award yearwill be registered as a full or part time student at any private or public Community College, College or University, working toward an Associate or Bachelors Degree, or an equivalent program.

REQUIRED SUBMISSIONS

In addition to completing and providing the Iowa NAHRO scholarship application form, the applicant must also provide:

1. A copy of the complete grades transcript from the high school that was attended as a senior, or for college students, the available complete academic grades report, or for those completing a G.E.D program, a full grades report.

2. A brief (1 page, 300 +/- words) letter describing yourself and why you would be an appropriate recipient of the Iowa NAHRO scholarship.

3. A letter of recommendation from a non-family member (example: School staff, employer, clergy, etc., with contact information).

4 . A signed certification from the local housing provider that you are either an employee of an agency in good standing, or a recipient of housing assistance from that PHA or CHODO or Community Development entity.

Absence of any of these required items can disqualify the applicant from further consideration. The application and attachments are required as a single submission stapled together and postmarked by May 31 to:

GENERAL PROCESS

The Scholarship Committee expects to promptly undertake review of applications and render a recommendation of awards to the Chapter Board at its June meeting. Factors pertinent to the committee's review will include academic standing, extracurricular activities, service to the community, the applicant's letter and the letter of recommendation. Scoring is final and confidential and final scores will not be available for review other than by the scholarship committee or the Board of Directors upon its request. All applications submitted with supporting documentation will be treated as strictly confidential and those applications not chosen for funding shall be shredded for confidentiality. This scholarship program is a once only grant and cannot be repeated in subsequent years to the same individual.

Disbursement of awarded scholarship funds shall be made directly to the college or institution chosen by the student, in the name of the awarded student, so that funds are available for the fall session of the award year. The award is expected to be strictly for use toward tuition and or book expenses.
